The screen metrics are part of the window singleton, as are a number of platform-wide configuration options. Inherent in the one-window model is that it also implies a single screen, with one pixel ratio, one refresh rate, one text scale factor, etc. The data structures built for Flutter around window metrics and events are bound to a single Window global instance, and there are multiple places in the code, both on the engine and framework side, that assume that there is only one window. Historically, and until recently, Flutter has been mainly confined to mobile devices, which has implicitly determined that Flutter applications only needed (and indeed could only use) one main window on one screen. They should have programmatic control over the window creation and configuration, and be able to share data models and widget subtrees between them. This document describes the API and mechanisms for that. In order to implement many desirable features on desktop platforms, it is necessary to be able to open and manage multiple window contexts.
